Cherry Blossoms
Doris Dörrie | Germany/France | 2008 | 127 mins | TBC
Following in the traditions of Yasujiro Ozu, Cherry Blossoms reconciles the pangs of empty-nested parents and the grief of abrupt loss. After the sudden death of his wife, Rudi (Elmar Wepper) follows his third child, Klaus, to Klaus’s home in Tokyo.
However, unable to escape feelings of restless anxiety, Rudi takes to exploring the city and strikes up an unlikely friendship with a traditional Japanese folk dancer.
Set amidst the transient beauty of cherry blossom season, the film explores the human condition without the weight of heavy metaphor or cliché.
"A quiet, very beautiful film about the duality of love and death"
Philip French, The Observer
